Victorian Embroidery: An Authoritative Guide by Barbara Morris

This is a magnificent survey of Victorian embroidery. Its illustrations depict domestic and church embroidery from the 1830's through 1901: an array of quilts, wall hangings, cushions, clothing, screen panels, curtains and other items all beautifully embellished with the finest needlework. Supplemented by references to Victorian periodicals and pattern books, this collection is based on the author's firsthand study of rare surviving examples of the embroiderer's art from the Victoria and Albert Museum. Techniques include Berlin woolwork and beadwork, many kinds of whitework, patchwork and applique and the artistic ingenuity of designers such as William Morris and others connected with the Arts and Crafts Movement.
