To Ornament Their Minds: Sarah Pierce's Litchfield Female Academy 1792 - 1833 by Theodore and Nancy Sizer, Sally Schwager, Lynne Templeton Brickley & Glee Krueger

This exhibition, sponsored by the Litchfield historical Society, started out as the topic of a dissertation. Lynne Templeton Brickley, a then Ed.D. candidate at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, chose Litchfield Female Academy as her topic. Her dissertation provided the historical basis for this project. This catalog consists of four chapters each one contributed by the authors listed. Theodore and Nancy Sizer provide an extensive introduction entitled "Simple Earnest Fearlessness: Sarah Pierce and the Litchfield Female Academy, 1792 - 1833". Sally Schwager follows with "All United Like Sisters: The Legacy of the Early Female Academies". The research of Lynne Templeton Brickley provides the basis for "The Litchfield Female Acadamy"  and, finally, Glee Krueger provides "Paper and Silk: The Ornamental Arts of the Litchfield Female Academy". Also provided are checklists of Litchfield Female Academy Objects in both the Historical Society coleections asn well as in other collections, archival sources and a listing of the students known to have attended the Academy. This is both a fascinating read and a wonderful resource for those interested in further study of the popular genre of schoolgirl needlework.
