Knit One, Purl One: Historic and Contemporary Knitting from the V & A's Collection by Frances Hinchcliffe

Today knitting is both popular and fashionable. The production of knitted in proportion to woven fabrics has increased dramatically in recent years. It was estimated that in 1970 over half of all clothing fabric produced in the British Isles was knitted and that this amount was rapidly increasing. This exhibition and this booklet focus on the technique as used for fashionable dress in Europe. It recognizes the long-standing interest in the history of the technique and the current explosion of creative knitting by leading designers and artist craftsmen.
