An Introduction to Blackwork from The Compleat Anachronist

This pamphlet is an introduction to blackwork and is presented so that novice embroiderers can begin stitching blackwork items and have a starting place for further research of the subject. Starting with a general history of the subject, the publication continues with an article on Elizabethan embroidery. The remainder of the book is devoted to materials, stitches (excellent diagrams), designing a piece of blackwork (including laying out embroidery designs for samplers, trim, panels and free form embroideries) and designing garb and accessories (including a sweet bag, a lady's cap and a lady's doublet). Some historical patterns are included along with a useful bibliography, a list of sources for materials (may be outdated) and a list of embroidery guilds (for members). A very interesting pamphlet.
