Designer Phyllis Maurer subtitles her series of Ethnic Fiber Arts books, "Honoring Cultural Diversity." Her goal is to introduce more embroiderers to beautiful ethnic embroideries, as well as give the history, materials, teach the technique (with very clear diagrams and photos) and provide projects to try. She wants to help others uncover their heritage as well as preserve seldom seen techniques.

Flower Power
Inspired by Swedish Naversom In this book Phyllis teaches a beautiful and classic Naversom corner motif. Naversom is a needlework technique originating in the Halsingland district of Sweden, where samples have been found from the 17th to 18th century. The word Naversom translates as "Birch-Bark Embroidery", taking its name from the birch bark frame originally used to support the embroidery as it was being stitched. |

Grandma's Doily
Inspired by Norwegian Hardanger This design is part of designer Maurer's personal family heritage, originally stitched by the Norwegian grandmother as a young woman. It is a very good example of the technique that shows some of the characteristics of a traditional Hardanger project. If you are new to Hardanger, you may want to familiarize yourself with the basics as basic stitch information is not included in this booklet. |
