Embroidery and Colour by Constance Howard

More than any other craft, embroidery lends itself to the full exploitation of color. Few people, however, have so natural a sense of color that their choice is instinctively right. It is here that this book, by the most distinguished English teacher of embroidery, will be found so valuable. Constance Howard recognizes that color preference is always personal. Expert guidance is nonetheless necessary if a design is to escape timidly conventional color schemes on the one hand or dazzling garishness on the other. Avoiding scientific theories, the author concentrates on the essentially practical considerations which have been found so helpful by her many student in Great Britain and America. Her advice on design, and on the appropriateness of particular stitches to textural color schemes, is very much to the point. Individual sections of the book consider: Color and Symbol; Color and Environment; Color Observation; Color and Embroidery; Color Mixing; Color Principles; and Using Color.
