Assisi Embroidery by Eva Maria Leszner
Assisi embroidery is a special form of cross stitch work using a technique known as 'voiding', in which the background , rather than the design, is worked. The pattern which remains is outlined with a darker color in Holbein stitch to give it extra definition and the motifs are then surrounded by delicate Holbein stitch scrollwork. This collection of over 80 charted designs, all of which originated in Assisi in the first quarter of the twentieth century, is accompanied by full instructions on working methods, materials and techniques as well as advice on using the patterns.
