American Crewelwork: Stitches of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries by Marie Brooke Layton, Mary Taylor Landon & Sue Swan

A very interesting study, the authors have compiled a hand-book of the only stitches they were able to find in American Crewel Embroidery of the 17th and 18th centuries. Included are Arrowhead, Bullion, Buttonhole with variations, Chain, Cross, Fern, Fishbone, Flat, French Knot, Ladder, Outline, Roumanian Couching, Satin, Seed and Trellis Couching with the Ladder and Flat stitch used more often than the others. The work of the average needlewoman of Colonial times shows only three or four stitches in any one piece. A handy reference and interesting read!
