American Quilts & Coverlets in The Metropolitan Museum of Art by Amelia Peck
The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection of American quilts and coverlets includes many little-known masterpieces of the genre that transcend the category of domestic craft and are works of fine art in their own right. This volume presents the entire collection of 119 quilts and coverlets in the Museum's possession, many of them published here for the first time. Seventy-one highlights are featured, each illustrated with a full-page color plate. There are also full-page color details of many works that emphasize their aesthetic appeal and technical prowess. These highlights are arranged chronologically in four sections, with texts that provide a history of the development of quilt and coverlet making in the United States from the eighteenth through the twentieth century. Methods and materials used in their making and histories of the makers' families are also discussed.
