A Primer of New England Crewel Embroidery by Catherine A. Hedlund
Of all the feminine arts of eighteenth and early nineteenth-century New England, crewel embroidery, perhaps, is the loveliest and most appealing. The many examples that remain to us in museums, in historical societies and in the hands of private collectors reflect in the minds of their workers a love of color and design, a skill with the needle and a sense of beauty that we cannot but admire and that some few of us have been inspired to emulate. This book is a collection of photographs, patterns and stitch diagrams from some of these wonderful embroideries.
